Tuba trios

Rondo
by Ludwig von Beethoven
trans. Mark Prater
This short Rondo (1783) was among Beethoven’s earliest published pieces, written when he was assistant court organist to the Elector of Cologne and harpsichordist to the court orchestra. Originally written for piano, it shows the keyboard technique of the young master as well as his grasp of the form. This transcription is so wonderfully conceived that it can be performed equally well as a trombone trio, tuba trio (2 euphoniums, 1 tuba) or for a conical trio (horn, euphonium, and tuba).

Tuba choir

Berceuse Op.16
by Grabiel Fauré
trans. Mark Prater
The berceuse is a lullaby or an instrumental composition suggesting a lullaby. Mark Prater transcribed Faure’s work, originally written for violin and piano, for trombone sextet or “conical” sextet consisting of a horn, four euphoniums, and tuba. The sound produced by these brass instruments surely is capable of soothing the savage beast. This is a work you will want in your library.

Andante con Moto
by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
trans. Mark Prater
When one thinks of quiet, brooding, dark music, Felix Mendelssohn rarely comes to mind. However, in this movement the usually ebullient composer plumbs the depths of human emotion. This transcription is for trombone quintet or conical quintet of one horn, two euphoniums, and two tubas. Excellently set, this is something for your choir to enjoy.

Andante Tranquillo
by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
trans. Mark Prater
Alongside the name of Cesar Franck on a list of composers of great organ music of the Romantic period is that of Felix Mendelssohn, best known in this genre for his six organ sonatas. The Andante Tranquillo from Sonata #3 (1844) demonstrates his lyricism and the influence of J.S. Bach. Mr. Prater has made a masterful transcription, flexible enough to be performed equally well as a trombone quintet, tuba quintet (3 euphoniums, 2 tuba), or a conical quintet (1 horn, 2 euphoniums, and 2 tubas).

by Piotr Tchaikovsky
trans. Chris Sharp
This transcription for three euphoniums (optional treble parts) and three tubas was written for, and received it’s premiere at, the 1994 Central Florida “Octuba” Festival. This electrifying piece spares nothing but the artillery and it is sure to bring down the house at your next tuba choir concert. “The power and intensity of this work make this excellent material for a tuba choir….This is fun for both performers and audience.” Charles McAdams T.U.B.A. Journal, Fall, 1995.
