Flute Solos

Nymphs – Solo Flute
by J. Abelardo D. Flores

This suite for solo flute which attempts to musically portray figures from Greek mythology who were associated with water. Arethusa was a nymph who was transformed into a stream in order to escape an amorous pursuer; thus the movement has a capricious , chase-like character to it. Thetis is a more contemplative movement to reflect the mythological nymph possessed with both the gift of prophecy and the ability to change her shape at will. The Nysaeans (or Nysiades) were the nymphs entrusted to raise the infant god Dionysus, and the movement is divided into sections, each with a peculiar character. The piece calls for extended techniques, such as key clicks and tone bends. The slow sections should be played freely.
