Sonata No.3 – Alto Sax Concerto
by Georg Frederic Handel
trans. Jamie Wehr
This Sonata No.3 was transcribed by request of Dr. Cynthia Fraser, soloist, and Mr. James Coe, Director of Music at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Oviedo, Florida. It has received its premiere March 29th, 2009. Obviously not originally for the alto saxophone, but this piece displays all the beauty and virtuosity that a the instrument can convey. Written in the typical four movement style of his time; Handel begins the sonata with lovely and rather laconic slow movement, then moves to a sprightly and virtuosic second movement. The third movement is again slow and sanguine, while the fourth and last movement is a most enjoyable jig. Set for chamber orchestra, [standard string section w/ 2 flutes, oboe, Bb clarinet, and 2 bassoons].

Nigerian Concerto – Trumpet Concerto
by Godwin Sadoh
This ground breaking new work for trumpet solo and chamber orchestra, [strings w/flute, Bb clarinet, bassoon and horn in F] by Godwin Sadoh is a three-movement work based on Yoruba folksongs. The first movement is in three-part form and it is based on two Yoruba songs: [1] “Ororo ila, olobe iyo” [Okra stew is sweet and flavorful] and [2] “Labalaba f’ara re we ye” [The butterfly likes to imitate the bird]. The second movement is a stately slow section based on a Yoruba folksong “E ma tori mi ye para yin o” [Do not hurt yourselves because of me]. The text is typical of Yoruba proverbs that caution people about imitation and unnecessary interference in other folks’ affairs. The third movement is a very lively piece characterized by scintillating dance rhythms.
